If a shortcut leads to a certain folder and you move that folder, you’re going to break the shortcut. If you installed an application in a certain folder and you move that folder, you’re going to break the installation. If you don’t want to break anything, then I suggest you use Free Move, a free and portable tool that can move folders from one place to another without breaking installations or shortcuts.
As mentioned above, Free Move is portable software. I bring this up again because I want to make it perfectly clear that Free Move doesn’t need to be installed. To get started with this application you need to download the Free Move executable and run it. Please note that you’ll have to run it with admin rights, otherwise it won’t work.
As you can see from the screenshots and Quick Look video that accompany this article, Free Move has a very simple interface. Use the "Move From" box at the top to pick the folder that will be moved, use the "To" box to choose where the folder will be moved, click the "Move" button to initiate the moving process. If you want to hide the moved folder out of sight, check the option to "Set original folder to hidden."
How does Free Move manage to move folders from one location to another without breaking installations or shortcuts? The developer clearly spells it out on Free Move’s GitHub page: "A directory junction is created from the old location to the new one. This way trying to access a file from its old location will simply redirect to the new one."
Although Free Move can move folders from one location to another without breaking installations and shortcuts, you’re advised to refrain from moving important system directories that could break core Windows functions.
Free Move is free software released under a GNU General Public License (GPL).
Moving folders from one location to another won’t break installations and shortcuts, not if you do it with the free and portable Free Move.
Pros
Free Move is portable software that doesn’t need to be installed. The interface is incredibly simple. Free Move can move folders from one location to another without breaking installations and shortcuts (it does this by creating a junction between the old location and the new one). Free Move is free software.
Cons
You must run Free Move with admin rights otherwise it won’t move a thing.
